Summer Legal Institute: Washington, DC
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with JTB for the 2024 Summer Legal Institute (SLI) - Washington, DC. SLI is an exciting multi-day program designed to introduce high school students to the legal system, expose them to careers in the legal field, and provide them with the practical tools necessary to achieve their educational goals. JTB is searching for volunteers to help make the program successful! Below is a list of volunteer opportunities in Washington, DC. on July 08 - 12, 2024. All volunteers should be engaging, prepared, and excited to work with high school students interested in law!

Volunteer Opportunities:
  • Mock Law School Class: Help high school students understand IRAC: Issue, Rule, Analysis, Conclusion. Students will be preparing for an oral argument competition using a fact pattern and two precedent cases. We're seeking attorneys or law school professors to walk through the precedent cases using IRAC and help the students pull out the relevant rules to apply to their fact pattern. The cases will be provided to the speakers ahead of time.
  • Professional Etiquette: Present on networking skills, the "elevator pitch", appropriate questions to ask attorneys and judges, email etiquette, and more!
  • Financial Literacy: Provide students with an overview of how to manage money. Discuss credit scores, banking, student loans, and more.
  • Oral Argument Evaluation: Join our Appellate panel and ask students questions during their oral argument presentations. Students will appreciate your insightful feedback regarding the arguments they have worked on throughout the week. Volunteers will evaluate their performance using a set of criteria provided by JTB.
  • Law in the Headlines: Provide legal context to controversial issues students are familiar with via high-profile media stories, (i.e. Britney Spear's Conservatorship, the overturning of Roe v. Wade, etc.)
  • Topics in Law: Help students understand what it's like to practice law in the real world! Discuss your practice area of law and what it entails. This lesson may include an exploration of a relevant case to help students understand the practice.
